Nestled in the heart of the Sandhills and the greater Pinehurst area, the beloved Ellis Maples Golf Course at Woodlake has undergone a remarkable transformation—one that honors the region’s natural beauty and rich golfing heritage. Guided by thoughtful planning and a deep respect for the spirit of the Sandhills, the renovation seamlessly blends timeless design with modern refinement, elevating the course to an extraordinary new standard.
Originally crafted in 1971 by Ed Seay and Ellis Maples, the Maples Course has long been a cherished destination for golfers, known for its lush Bermuda greens, winding fairways, and picturesque routing around a serene lake. From 2021 to 2023, the course was fully restored under the direction of renowned architect Kris Spence, carefully revitalizing its classic character while enhancing playability for today’s golfer.
Just 20 minutes from the historic village of Pinehurst, Woodlake offers an unforgettable golf experience for players of every level. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or discovering the game for the first time, the Maples Course invites you to experience the artistry, challenge, and timeless appeal of championship golf in the heart of the Southeast.


About the Renovation

GolfPass recently recognized the Maples Course renovation as one of the “25 Notable Golf Course Renovations Set to Be Unveiled in 2023,” affirming the significance of this restoration. In keeping with our commitment to honoring the soul of the Sandhills and the Pinehurst area, we set out to return the Ellis Maples Golf Course to its original brilliance. The restoration thoughtfully removed years of overgrowth and encroaching trees, reopening long‑hidden sightlines, restoring strategic elements, and revealing the sweeping vistas and challenging play that have long defined this iconic course.


 

A Reimagined 18th Hole, A Stunning Conclusion to Your Round & The All-New 19th Hole, a Toast to Your Success

One of the most exciting highlights of our renovation is the complete reimagining of the iconic 18th hole. Designed to deliver a thrilling and memorable finale, this closing hole now guides players toward the breathtaking shores of our serene lake, creating a stunning visual and strategic finish to every round.
After holing out on 18, golfers are invited to continue the tradition at our newly renovated clubhouse and brand‑new 19th hole. This inviting gathering place celebrates the spirit of the game—where friends reconnect, stories are shared, exceptional cuisine is enjoyed, and toasts are raised to rounds well played.
